What Twitch gives you built in
We couldn't find a daily time limit, break reminder or parental time control in Twitch. ConnectSafely's parent guide to Twitch doesn't name one either, and says parents "should certainly consider putting time limits on their teen's use of Twitch."2 So any limit has to come from your phone or a blocker.
The gambling problem
In 2022, after an outcry from streamers, Twitch banned streams of "slots, roulette, or dice games that aren't licensed either in the U.S. or other jurisdictions," naming sites like Stake.com and Roobet.com.3 The same report noted that "streams focused on sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker will still be permitted on Twitch."3
Islam forbids gambling. A stream that makes betting look like harmless fun normalises it, especially for teenagers watching late at night.
The loopholes that break most Twitch blocks
twitch.tv in the browser. Delete the app and every stream still plays in Safari or Chrome. Block twitch.tv too.
Other streaming sites. If Twitch closes, Kick and YouTube are a tap away. Block the ones you'd switch to.
Live notifications. Following a streamer means a notification whenever they go live, at whatever hour that is. Turn them off, or block the app for those hours.
How to block Twitch on iPhone and Android
Sunnah Lock works on iPhone and Android, and the steps are the same on both.
- Get Sunnah Lock from the App Store or Google Play.
- Create a block and choose when it runs. All day, set hours like evenings or bedtime until Fajr, or each prayer time. Streams often run late, so a block from Isha until Fajr does a lot of the work.
- Add Twitch, and add
twitch.tvto your website list. That closes the app and the site together, so the browser doesn't become the back door. Block any extra browsers you don't need while you're there. - Give the code to someone you trust. Let them set the code that protects your blocks. Without it, blocks can't be removed or switched off and Sunnah Lock can't be deleted, so a weak moment has nowhere to go.
Without installing anything
On iPhone, Screen Time can set an App Limit for Twitch. When you reach it, "you can tap One More Minute or send a request for more time."4 It helps most when someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.
On Android, go to Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers and set a timer on Twitch. When time runs out, "the app closes and its icon dims."5 You can change the timer in a couple of taps, and neither tool closes the website in your browser.
