Many people remember Tumblr as the site that banned adult content. In December 2018 it announced that "all adult content will be permanently banned from its platform on December 17."1
That's no longer the rule. In November 2022 Tumblr started allowing nudity again.2 Its current User Guidelines say: "Nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome."3 Explicit sexual acts are still not allowed,3 but the line sits much further out than most parents assume.
What Tumblr gives you built in
We couldn't find a time limit, break reminder or parental control in Tumblr's help centre. Any limit has to come from your phone or a blocker.
Why Tumblr is easy to get around
Not every Tumblr blog lives at tumblr.com. A blog can be connected to its own domain, and Tumblr's help page notes that "a domain can only be connected to one blog at any given time."4 Blocking tumblr.com won't catch those addresses, so keep the adult content filter on as well.
The loopholes that break most Tumblr blocks
Blog addresses. Blogs also load at name.tumblr.com addresses. After you block tumblr.com, open one to check it's closed too.
Custom domains. Some blogs run on their own domain, which a tumblr.com block can't see. The adult content filter is what covers those.
Reblogs. You follow ten blogs, but your dashboard shows everything they reblog. One reblog is enough.
How to block Tumblr on iPhone and Android
Sunnah Lock works on iPhone and Android, and the steps are the same on both.
- Get Sunnah Lock from the App Store or Google Play.
- Create a block and choose when it runs. All day, set hours like evenings or bedtime until Fajr, or each prayer time. For Tumblr, all day is usually the right setting.
- Add Tumblr, and add
tumblr.comto your website list. That closes the app and the site together, so the browser doesn't become the back door. Block any extra browsers you don't need while you're there. - Give the code to someone you trust. Let them set the code that protects your blocks. Without it, blocks can't be removed or switched off and Sunnah Lock can't be deleted, so a weak moment has nowhere to go.
Without installing anything
On iPhone, Screen Time can set an App Limit for Tumblr. When you reach it, "you can tap One More Minute or send a request for more time."5 It helps most when someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.
On Android, go to Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers and set a timer on Tumblr. When time runs out, "the app closes and its icon dims."6 You can change the timer in a couple of taps, and neither tool closes the website in your browser.
