Quick answer
Block the Threads app and threads.com together, then give the code to someone you trust so you can't undo it in the moment. Sunnah Lock does this on iPhone and Android with the same steps. If you only want less Threads, schedule it: open for one set time a day, locked the rest.
Threads is Meta's text feed, the one that links straight out of Instagram. It looks calmer than X, but it runs on the same thing every feed runs on: there's always one more post.
Only 6% of US teens said they use Threads in Pew's 2024 survey,1 so for most families this is an adult habit. It usually starts as a quick look and ends as the evening.
What Threads gives you built in
Threads can remind you to take breaks. Meta's help page says: "You can turn on reminders to take regular breaks while you're using Threads."3 In late 2025 Threads also added a screen that shows how much time you spend on it each day, and a sleep mode you can set for different times on different days, as Social Media Today reported.4
For teens, Meta announced supervision tools that let a parent "set a daily time limit for how long their teen can use Threads."5
The catch for adults: every one of these is a setting inside Threads. A reminder is something you dismiss, and a limit you set yourself is a limit you can switch off.
The loopholes that break most Threads blocks
threads.com in the browser. Delete the app and Threads still works in Safari or Chrome. Since April 2025 threads.com is the main address and threads.net forwards to it, so block both.2
Instagram. Threads is one tap from Instagram. If Instagram is also where your time goes, block Instagram too.
The reminder you set yourself. A break reminder you can tap past at 11pm isn't a limit. It's a suggestion.
How to block Threads on iPhone and Android
Sunnah Lock works on iPhone and Android, and the steps are the same on both.
- Get Sunnah Lock from the App Store or Google Play.
- Create a block and choose when it runs. All day, set hours like evenings or bedtime until Fajr, or each prayer time. If you use Threads for work, leave one short window open and lock the rest of the day.
- Add Threads, and add
threads.comandthreads.netto your website list. That closes the app and the site together, so the browser doesn't become the back door. Block any extra browsers you don't need while you're there. - Give the code to someone you trust. Let them set the code that protects your blocks. Without it, blocks can't be removed or switched off and Sunnah Lock can't be deleted, so a weak moment has nowhere to go.
Without installing anything
On iPhone, Screen Time can set an App Limit for Threads. When you reach it, "you can tap One More Minute or send a request for more time."6 It helps most when someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.
On Android, go to Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers and set a timer on Threads. When time runs out, "the app closes and its icon dims."7 You can change the timer in a couple of taps, and neither tool closes the website in your browser.
