Quick answer
Telegram has no time limit or parental controls of its own that we could find. Block the Telegram app plus telegram.org, web.telegram.org, t.me and telegram.me, then give the code to someone you trust. Sunnah Lock does this on iPhone and Android with the same steps.
Telegram is a messaging app, which is why it's easy to keep. It's also huge public channels and groups that anyone can join from a single link, and that's usually where the trouble is.
Telegram says it is "one of the top 5 most downloaded apps in the world with over 1 billion active users."1
What Telegram gives you built in
We couldn't find any time limit, break reminder or parental control in Telegram's FAQ.1 The same FAQ says: "Private groups and chats on Telegram are private amongst their participants. We do not process any requests related to them."1 For a parent, that means what happens in a private group stays between the people in it.
Do you need Telegram at all?
Plenty of families use Telegram for a masjid group, a class or Islamic lessons. If that's you, don't block it all day. Lock it at night and during study, and keep it for the groups you actually need.
If a channel or a link has become the problem, block the app fully for a while. You can always open it again on a schedule later.
The loopholes that break most Telegram blocks
Telegram Web. Telegram runs in the browser at web.telegram.org, logged in and all. Block it along with the app.
t.me links. Invite links use t.me, and telegram.me works the same way. Add both, so a link someone sends you can't open in the browser.
The computer. Telegram also has a desktop app. A block on the phone doesn't reach the laptop.
How to block Telegram on iPhone and Android
Sunnah Lock works on iPhone and Android, and the steps are the same on both.
- Get Sunnah Lock from the App Store or Google Play.
- Create a block and choose when it runs. All day, set hours like evenings or bedtime until Fajr, or each prayer time. If you need Telegram for a masjid group or classes, lock it at night and during study instead of all day.
- Add Telegram, and add
telegram.org,web.telegram.org,t.meandtelegram.meto your website list. That closes the app and the site together, so the browser doesn't become the back door. Block any extra browsers you don't need while you're there. - Give the code to someone you trust. Let them set the code that protects your blocks. Without it, blocks can't be removed or switched off and Sunnah Lock can't be deleted, so a weak moment has nowhere to go.
Without installing anything
On iPhone, Screen Time can set an App Limit for Telegram. When you reach it, "you can tap One More Minute or send a request for more time."2 It helps most when someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.
On Android, go to Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers and set a timer on Telegram. When time runs out, "the app closes and its icon dims."3 You can change the timer in a couple of taps, and neither tool closes the website in your browser.
