Quick verdict
Nothing on desktop blocks harder than Cold Turkey, so most people looking for a cold turkey alternative should keep it and add a phone blocker instead. Cold Turkey has no mobile app and the developer has said it is not coming. On Android, Sunnah Lock covers that gap and is free right now. If you would rather run one app across everything, Freedom is the answer. SelfControl is the free swap on Mac.
I make Sunnah Lock, one of the five apps below. Read accordingly. I am also telling you not to cancel Cold Turkey, which should tell you something about how good it is.
The real problem with Cold Turkey
It is not the price. $39 once, covering every computer you personally use, is the fairest deal in this category. No subscription, no annual renewal.
It is not the strictness either. Frozen Turkey will lock you out of the entire machine on a schedule. Not an app. The whole computer. The Pro timer refuses to end early no matter how much you want it to at 11pm.
The problem is that Cold Turkey stops at the edge of your desk.
There is no Android app. There is no iPhone app. The developer's own support documentation explains why: operating system limitations prevent them from building something on mobile that is equally hard to delete. That is an unusually honest thing for a company to publish, and it is also the end of the conversation. A phone version is not on the way.
So here is what happens. You install Cold Turkey. You set Frozen Turkey for your working hours. The laptop goes dark. And you reach for the phone lying face down next to it, because that device never heard of Cold Turkey.
Most people searching for a cold turkey alternative are not unhappy with Cold Turkey. They have found the hole in their coverage and assumed they need to replace the software. Usually they need to extend it.
What to look for
Does it reach the phone? This is the whole question for most of you. A second desktop blocker adds nothing.
Can you stop it early? Cold Turkey's unbreakable timer set the standard. Anything that lets you cancel a session in the moment you want to cancel it is a suggestion, not a block.
Does it block a category, or only a list? Cold Turkey blocks the sites you name. Fine for Reddit. Useless against a category of content where a new address appears every week.
One-time or subscription? Coming off a $39 lifetime licence, a $100 annual bill lands badly.
1. Sunnah Lock — the phone half Cold Turkey never had
I built this, so discount it accordingly.
Sunnah Lock is the Android blocker you pair with Cold Turkey rather than one you swap it for. Cold Turkey holds the laptop, this holds the phone, and the gap in the middle closes.
It blocks apps, websites and keywords, and it catches Reels, Shorts, explicit sites and explicit search results before they load. The keyword layer is the piece Cold Turkey has no equivalent for. Cold Turkey needs you to name a site. Sunnah Lock can make a whole category of search return nothing, which matters when the list you are fighting grows faster than you can maintain it.
Strict mode is the closest thing here to Frozen Turkey's spirit. Changing a block requires the PIN, and uninstalling or disabling the app is locked down as well. On a child's device that second part is the entire product.
Free on Android during launch, and early users keep a full year at no cost.
Where it loses. Android only today. Windows and iOS are in development, which means right now this is a companion to Cold Turkey and not a replacement for it. If you want one licence covering laptop and phone in a single app, skip to Freedom. It is also young, with a shorter track record than Cold Turkey's decade.
2. Freedom — one app across every device
Freedom is the only option here that genuinely replaces Cold Turkey rather than supplementing it.
It runs on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and Chrome, and it syncs sessions across all of them. Start a block anywhere and every device you own goes quiet together. That is the thing Cold Turkey cannot do at any price.
Locked mode is the feature to buy it for. It stops you ending a session early, which is Freedom's answer to the unbreakable timer.
Where it loses. $39.99 a year, or $99.50 once for lifetime. Cold Turkey is $39 once, full stop, so you are paying a real premium for the cross-device sync. Locked mode and scheduling are both missing from the free plan, so free is a trial rather than a tier. And Freedom does not hold a desktop as tightly as Cold Turkey does; nothing does.
3. SelfControl — the free Mac swap
If you are on a Mac and $39 is the sticking point, this is your answer and it costs nothing.
SelfControl is free and open source. You add domains, set a timer up to 24 hours, and start it. Those domains become unreachable from every browser and every app on the machine, because it blocks at the firewall rather than in the browser. Once the timer is running you cannot stop it. Restarting will not help. Deleting the app will not help.
For pure website blocking on a Mac, that is most of what Cold Turkey's paid tier gives you, for free.
Where it loses. macOS only, so Windows users can stop reading. It blocks websites, not applications, so Slack and Steam stay open. No scheduling, no recurring blocks, no phone. It does one thing extremely well and nothing else at all.
4. LeechBlock NG — free, and only the browser
LeechBlock NG is a free open source browser extension with up to 30 separate block sets, each with its own schedule and time limits. For granular control over which sites you can visit and when, it is more configurable than Cold Turkey's website blocking.
It costs nothing and installs in about a minute.
Where it loses. It lives inside one browser. Open a different browser and you are through. Open an app and it never sees you. Anyone who can install an extension can remove one, so there is no real enforcement. Treat this as a productivity nudge, not a blocker.
5. BlockSite — cross-platform, thin free tier
BlockSite covers browsers plus Android and iPhone, with a cleaner interface than most, password protection, and schedules.
At $36 a year it undercuts Freedom slightly and reaches the phone, which is more than Cold Turkey does.
Where it loses. The free tier caps you at three blocked sites, which is not a usable product. It is a subscription against Cold Turkey's one-time fee, so it costs more than Cold Turkey every single year after the first. Enforcement is lighter than either Cold Turkey or Sunnah Lock.
Side-by-side comparison

Which one should you pick
Cold Turkey works but your phone is the leak: keep Cold Turkey, add Sunnah Lock on Android. Total cost, nothing extra.
You want one app for everything: Freedom today, because it is the only one covering every device right now. Sunnah Lock for Windows and iPhone is in development, and when those land you get keyword and explicit-content filtering across all of it, which Freedom does not offer. Waitlist users keep a full year free.
You are on a Mac and will not pay: SelfControl. Free, brutal, website-only.
You only get distracted in the browser: LeechBlock NG. Free and enough.
You are blocking explicit content, not procrastination: Sunnah Lock. Cold Turkey blocks the sites you can name, and that is the wrong shape of tool for a problem where the list never stops growing.
Frequently asked questions
Does Cold Turkey have a phone app?
No. Cold Turkey runs on Windows and Mac only. The developer's documentation says operating system limitations prevent building something on mobile that is equally hard to delete, so a phone version is not coming.
What is the best free Cold Turkey alternative?
SelfControl on Mac. It is free, open source, blocks at the firewall level and cannot be stopped once the timer starts. On a phone, Sunnah Lock is free on Android during its launch period. LeechBlock NG is free but only covers the browser.
Can you bypass Cold Turkey?
Not easily, and that is the point. Pro's unbreakable timer refuses to end early, and Frozen Turkey locks the whole machine. Most people who get around it do so by using a phone or a second computer instead, which is a gap in coverage rather than a flaw in the software.
Is Cold Turkey worth $39?
If your distraction happens on a computer, yes. It is a one-time payment covering every computer you personally use, with no subscription, and nothing else on desktop enforces as hard.
What should I use alongside Cold Turkey?
A phone blocker, because that is the device Cold Turkey cannot reach. On Android, Sunnah Lock blocks apps, sites and keywords and locks uninstall behind a PIN. Freedom is the option if you need one app covering both desktop and phone.
Does Cold Turkey block explicit content?
Only if you list the sites yourself. Cold Turkey blocks what you tell it to block and has no category filter or keyword filter, so new sites get through until you add them. Tools built for content filtering handle that differently.
The honest conclusion
Cold Turkey is excellent software and I am not going to pretend my app beats it on a laptop. It does not.
What it cannot do is follow you to the device you actually pick up when the laptop goes dark. That is not a bug the developer can fix; it is a limit of the platform, and they have said as much in public.
If you are on Android, install Sunnah Lock and keep the Cold Turkey licence you already paid for. It takes about five minutes and costs nothing during launch.
If your phone is an iPhone, or you want one lock across laptop and phone from us rather than two apps, get on the waitlist. Windows and iOS are both in development and early users keep a full year free. Freedom covers you until then.
